Get started on your application!
Before you apply make sure:
  • You are the administrator or owner of the GitHub organization on behalf of whom you are applying
  • You have all necessary nonprofit documentation such as tax information and/or legal documents certifying your nonprofit status
  • You have reviewed the nonprofit eligibility below
  • You have verified the GitHub organization you will be filling the application out for.
  • You have clearly documented your affiliation with the organization.
Is your entity a nonprofit?

GitHub for Nonprofit accounts are designed for 501(c)(3) or equivalent nonprofit organizations that are non-governmental, non-academic, non-commercial, non-political in nature, and have no religious affiliation. The information you provide will be handled according to the GitHub privacy statement.

Applications may not be approved if they are missing important information that verifies your organization's nonprofit in accordance with our policy. Please make sure your application includes these details:

  • Upload your proof of your nonprofit status documents with your local government (501(c)(3) status in the U.S.
  • The registered name of your nonprofit
  • A summary of what your nonprofit organization does
  • Confirmation that your organization is nongovernmental, nonacademic, noncommercial, nonpolitical and has no religious affiliation
Troubleshooting:
  • If you do not see your organization on the dropdown list to apply for a nonprofit discount, try these steps:
    1. Remove then re-enable GitHub OAuth
      1. Go to your GitHub profile settings and remove the GitHub authorization for the GitHub for Nonprofits for your organizations. Follow these steps.
      2. Return to GitHub for Nonprofits page and authorize GitHub for Nonprofits. Make sure you select which organization you would like to be verified.
    2. Check to see if your organization allows for OAuth access via these steps.
